Embarking on an entrepreneurial journey is never an easy decision and when you take the first step, there is a rollercoaster ride that awaits you. Fears, doubts, highs, lows contribute to the emotional whirlwind that all entrepreneurs experience a number of times a day, a week, a month, a year. Consistently testing you…will you, wont you, will you, wont you…give up!
How do I know…because I’ve been there and if, like me, you’re going through or have been through this, then be assured, you’re not alone.
Lets just take a look at what defines an entrepreneur. According to the various definitions found online, an Entrepreneur is:
‘a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit.’ Or ‘a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.’
The word that stands out in both these definitions is the word RISK. Ultimately anyone who takes the chance on life without knowing the results, whether business or personal, is a risk taker. That’s what you are.
So why put yourself through it? Is that a question that you sometimes ask yourself?
It’s been almost 4 years since I took the journey and despite coming from a family of entrepreneurs, I was more than happy procrastinating and holding on to the security blanket of a regular, sizeable income through a regular, secure job. And since taking the step, there have been a number of questions which have popped up every so often.
Am I doing the right thing? Does this get any easier? Why am I doing this? Maybe I should just go and get a job? How will I get new clients? When will my clients pay me? Will I be able to pay my mortgage? Can I do this? How will I afford that? How can I leverage my business? How I reach more people? How can I leverage my time? Will I? Can I? Should I? What if? The list goes on…
The truth is, the entrepreneurial aka solopreneurial road is not straightforward. We hear so many ‘rags to riches’ stories of prolific business professionals who one day lost everything and then made millions overnight. That’s not really how it happens so don’t look for miracles. Instead look for opportunities!
Opportunities start to appear when you begin to surround yourself with the right people. For years, I was around the right people but because I hadn’t taken the risk and put myself out there, I wasn’t necessarily looking to see what was right in front of me. When I took the leap of faith – the opportunities became visible. They were there all the time only I wasn’t in a place to see them.
When you take the step; when you open your mind; when you ask better questions of yourself; the possibilities that were there all along become apparent and you’re in a place to take them.
You’re an entrepreneur! Congratulations and stay on the path you have started. I promise you – even if the road seems an uphill struggle at times, you will achieve what you set your mind to. There is a reason why you took this decision; took the risk.
Economist Joseph Alois Schumpeter says it best;
‘Entrepreneurs are not necessarily motivated by profit but regard it as a standard for measuring achievement or success.’
As an entrepreneur, yes the road to financial freedom is definitely a driver but there is something bigger and better that drives money. Having achieved something off your own back and dependent on your service or product, having helped others along the way. Entrepreneurs have a strong ‘WHY’ for doing what they do so like my friend, Cheryl Chapman, author of Find Your Why to be fricking Awesome’ who tells me, follow yours to the end.
